  • PAWS Chicago offers internships for students seeking academic credit. These positions are unpaid and operate within the guidelines of each university. Students will experience the wide diversity of the operations of an animal rescue organization, what goes into making it work and succeed each day. Duties can be tailored to fit into different educational majors and requirements as much as is practically possible.PAWS Chicago staff can provide mentorship to students in their professional capacities and give students hands-on exposure to this highly-rated and well-respected not-for-profit organization. Interns should share our passion for animals, believe in our mission to create a No Kill Chicago, and be willing to take the extra step. Interns will be asked to commit to a regular, mutually agreed upon schedule, for a minimum of 10 hours per week, and a three-to six-month term of service. All applicants must attend a New Volunteer Orientation and hands-on training for their specific area of interest. Interns must also comply with dress code, other center requirements and conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with the company handbook. We strive to create an environment for our interns which fosters ethics, learning and development while developing a deeper understanding and practice of community service.

    Adoption Center Communications Internship

    Responsibilities:

    Engage in a variety of volunteer responsibilities under the supervision of the PAWS Chicago staff. Intern responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Assist with managing the welcome desk and providing excellent customer service to potential adopters, volunteers and other visitors. Greet and welcome guests, assist with guiding customers and return phone calls.
    • Complete ongoing tasks and projects including daily data entry and website maintenance with strong attention to detail.
    • Engage with and provide guidance for volunteers.
    • Work with potential adopters and facilitate adoption counseling for cat and dog adoptions.

    Students in this position will develop customer service and communication skills. Our staff provides professional mentorship to students and gives students hands on, day-to-day exposure to the organization’s operations.

    Special skills required/desired:

    • Commitment to a high level of customer service.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications, with the ability to represent the mission, goals, policies, and core values of PAWS Chicago in a sincere and energetic manner.
    • Comfort with a dynamic environment in which flexibility is key.

    Animal Care Program Internship

    Interns can engage in a variety of responsibilities including the daily care cleaning of all animals housed at PAWS Chicago’s Adoption Center, including daily feeding, cleaning of all animal areas (both dogs and cats), and monitoring and following through with medical and behavior observation to ensure each animal is receiving the PAWS Chicago care standard.

    Volunteer Program Internship

    Interns can engage in a variety of responsibilities including, but not limited to, volunteer recruitment, training and retention and a variety of administrative functions including preparation and analysis of volunteer reporting, management of volunteer communication, involvement in our family services and hands on work with our animals.

    North Shore Adoption Center Management Internship

    Responsibilities:

    This position is based out of the Glenn L. Felner North Shore Adoption Center, located at 1616 Deerfield Road in Highland Park, IL.

    Schedule

    The North Shore Adoption Center is open Wednesday “� Sunday. Interns commit to a mutually agreed upon schedule. PAWS Chicago requires that interns complete 10-15 hours per week over the course of a typical (4-6 month) semester for a minimum of 100 hours on the job.

    Foster Program Internship

    We are looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented animal-lover to join the fastest growing Foster Team in the Midwest! Arguably the pulse of PAWS Chicago, the Foster Program places hundreds of kittens, puppies and adult animals into loving foster-homes in order to help animals recover from illness in a warm, home environment while also opening up invaluable space at our Medical Center for new rescues daily! The equation is simple : the more animals in foster, the more animals we can save from peril!

    As a Foster Program Intern, you will assist the team in animal placement, foster parent recruitment, social media promotions, special event animal selection and medical maintenance of current foster families. Gain experience in customer service, non-profit marketing, event planning, program management and volunteer training all while saving hundreds of animals in the process! There’s no greater reward than seeing a sick animal leap into their foster parents’ arms, corralled by love & warmth and return stronger, happier & healthier than ever!

    Time Commitment : 10-15 Hrs Weekly (Mon “� Sun)
