  • PAWS Chicago offers internships for students seeking academic credit. These positions are unpaid and operate within the guidelines of each university. Students will experience the wide diversity of the operations of an animal rescue organization, what goes into making it work and succeed each day. Duties can be tailored to fit into different educational majors and requirements as much as is practically possible.PAWS Chicago staff can provide mentorship to students in their professional capacities and give students hands-on exposure to this highly-rated and well-respected not-for-profit organization. Interns should share our passion for animals, believe in our mission to create a No Kill Chicago, and be willing to take the extra step. Interns will be asked to commit to a regular, mutually agreed upon schedule, for a minimum of 10 hours per week, and a four-to six-month term of service. All applicants must attend a New Volunteer Orientation and hands-on training for their specific area of interest. Interns must also comply with dress code, other center requirements and conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with the company handbook. We strive to create an environment for our interns which fosters ethics, learning and development while developing a deeper understanding and practice of community service.

    Animal Operations Internship

    OVERVIEW

    The PAWS Chicago Foster Program places thousands of kittens, puppies, and adult animals into loving foster homes every year in order to help animals recover from illness/injury, provide a break from the shelter environment, and open invaluable space at our facilities. Many animals are sitting at the city pound, uncertain of their fates. The more animals we can send into foster, the more lives we can save.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Recruiting and training new foster families.
    • Ensuring a smooth workflow for foster onboarding.
    • Communicating with prospective and current foster families.
    • Social media promotions.
    • Managing the foster database and appointment scheduling and follow-up.
    • Coordinating medical maintenance for current foster families.

    REQUIREMENTS

    OVERVIEW

    The PAWS Chicago Animal Care Team plays one of the most crucial roles in the organization ““ the direct care of all PAWS Chicago animals.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Participating in the daily care of all animals (dogs and cats).
    • Following cleaning, feeding, and watering protocols to maintain the health of the animals.
    • Providing enrichment and socialization to the animals.
    • Ensuring the animal housing areas are organized and presentable.
    • Identifying and communicating animal health and/or behavioral observations.
    • Providing guidance and supervision for volunteers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Passion for animals and belief in our mission to create a No Kill Chicago.
    • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time and perform physical tasks that include but are not limited to climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, crawling, holding, and lifting.

It would be impossible to fulfill the mission of a No Kill Chicago without them. Volunteers touch every aspect of our operations, and this work enables us to magnify our impact and save more lives. The PAWS Chicago Volunteer Program manages all facets of a robust volunteer workforce and supports the operation of every department of the organization, from development to veterinary services, adoptions to community outreach, and everything in between.

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Participating in community engagement, recruiting, and training new volunteers.
    • Ensuring a smooth workflow for volunteer onboarding.

PAWS Chicago aims to ensure that these families do not have to sacrifice their companion animal during these challenging times. These families are then able to keep their pets in their homes, preventing them from entering shelters.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Networking with community organizations.
    • Organizing and hosting weekly Pet Food Pantry events.
    • Procuring donations to stock the Pet Food Pantry.
    • Organizing the program donations.
    • Managing the client database and general case management.
    • Developing and evaluating the Program.
    • Coordinating volunteers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Community Cats Program Internship

    OVERVIEW

    Community Cats is a cutting-edge program that employs effective tools in outdoor cat population and health management. This program combines our successful outreach and engagement strategies with expert knowledge on outdoor cat issues to reduce cat overpopulation and euthanasia in the City of Chicago. Community Cats also empowers and supports our city’s feeders of stray cats, transforming them into fully-informed, active, registered colony caretakers.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Expanding public awareness and community engagement/outreach in under-served neighborhoods.
    • Performing trap-neuter-return (TNR) for outdoor cats.
    • Managing phone calls, client counseling, and database information.
    • Assisting with TNR workshops and education of the public.
    • Coordinating trap rental and working with the Pet Food Pantry Program to meet client needs.
    • Participating in our barn transfer/relocation program to save the lives of feral cats with no place to go.
    • Caring for feral cats in the spay/neuter clinic.

    The PAWS for Life Program works on the ground in under-served communities of Chicago to remove barriers to pet wellness resources, with a focus on spay/neuter. This program directly reaches the most under-served areas of the city through door-to-door outreach and building positive relationships with pet owners. PAWS for Life is making strides toward a No Kill Chicago: keeping pets in their homes, reducing overpopulation, and empowering pet owners with the resources and information they need to make the healthiest decisions for their pets.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Interns will engage in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

    • Participating in strategic door-to-door community outreach and case management.
    • Relationship-building with community members in order to best assist them.
    • Managing the client database, spay/neuter appointment scheduling and follow-up.
    • Transporting and caring for pets receiving spay/neuter surgeries or other medical attention.
    • Planning and participating in PAWS for Life community outreach events such as vaccine clinics and mobile spay/neuter days.
    • Coordinating volunteers.
