  • The D. E. Shaw group is seeking motivated individuals with a desire to learn and contribute to join its internship program. Generalist interns will have the opportunity to work in one of several departments at the firm, such as corporate development, investor relations, risk, or the office of the chief operating officer. We are looking for critical thinkers and effective communicators with impressive records of achievement; generalist interns are highly analytical and excel at taking initiative and managing multiple projects.

As a generalist intern, you’ll collaborate with employees on challenging, high-impact projects that require creative problem-solving. Past generalist interns have analyzed data about new funds and counterparties, built risk models, and evaluated whether and where to open offices overseas. You’ll be assigned a manager who will mentor you and support your professional development, and you’ll have opportunities to learn about the firm and the industry from both internal and external experts.

We are looking for students approaching their final year of full-time study. We neither expect nor require previous finance knowledge or experience, and we welcome applications from individuals from all academic disciplines; recent generalist interns majored in economics, biomedical engineering, public affairs, and social studies. In keeping with our firm’s culture, we are more interested in talent, curiosity, and motivation than we are in any particular skill or experience.
