    Law Student Intern- Summer 2018

    Overview:
    The Door’s mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a caring environment. Each year The Door provides more than 9,000 young people ages 12-24 with a wide range of services including reproductive health care, counseling, legal assistance, HSE and ESOL classes, tutoring, college preparation services, job training and placement, supportive housing, and nutritious meals – all for free, confidentially, and under one roof. The Door’s Legal Services Center is an office of twelve attorneys, two support staff, and one social worker. We specialize in serving vulnerable youth, including those who are homeless, undocumented, and/or LGBTQ.

    The Center seeks law student interns for summer 2018 to represent young people in immigration, family law, foster care, housing, and other matters. Our immigration practice focuses on pursuing forms of humanitarian relief including Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, asylum, U visas, and T visas. Our civil practice focuses on representing youth in matters such as family law, landlord/tenant matters, and public benefits.

    Responsibilities:
    • Interview clients
    • Draft correspondence
    • Write affidavits and motions
    • Perform short legal research assignments
    • Prepare immigration applications
    • Advocate with government agencies
    • Have the opportunity to appear on the record in Family Court, Immigration Court, and/or in administrative hearings
    Qualifications:
    • Experience working with adolescents and/or clients in crisis is valued but not required.
    • Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
    • Proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, Haitian, Creole, or French is preferred
    • Must be a current law student (1L, 2L, 3L)
